States Bound: Girls Golf Wins Regional

Updated on 06/10/2022

The Lady Cougars won the D4 Region 22 tournament at Hunter's Ridge Golf Club today in convincing fashion by posting a 361, 23 strokes ahead of runner-up East Jackson High School. Hannah Hauser (C20) led the team with an 84, while teammates Amanda Melling (C22) and Noelle LaPorte (C20) shot personal bests of 90 and 97 respectively.  Sailor Somerville (C22) shot a 90 and Audrey Wichtoski (C21) a 103 to round out the scores.  Teammate Maya Blonshine (C22) was on hand to support her teammates and will see action at the state tournament next weekend.  Reflecting on the day, Coach Kim Johnson noted that the key to the first place win was that each golfer stayed focused and didn't allow over-par holes to get out of control.  According to Coach Johnson, "the only shot is the one that's in front of you," is a team philosophy he and Assistant Coach Mary Fineis teach and the players embrace, which has been key to the team maintaining the mental toughness needed to be competitive.  Coach Johnson also noted that the family support, which included siblings and grandparents at the regional tourney, was appreciated and helped to buoy the golfers fortitude over the course of the day. The Lady Cougars look to extend their winning season at the state finals ?next Friday? and ?Saturday, October 18? and 19 at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek.
